Many years ago, my father explained that the answer to that question is to be afraid of something and yet to do it anyway. The occasion of that lesson was my explaining to him and my mother how I overcame my fear of heights (not once, but twice) to voluntarily take part in a rappelling exercise on one of my National Guard drills. I still remember how scared I was, when I did it. I’ve always had a bit of a phobia with heights. My dad looked at me and said: “That’s courage. Being afraid of something and doing it anyway.” My fear of heights, however, is nothing compared to the fear that Staff Sergeant James Gibson faced over 60 years ago when he stood down a German Tiger Tank (and won!) or when he charged into a squad of German soldiers, firing his rifle and tossing all the grenades that he had!

To read more....

"Choosing Courage Over Fear: A Lesson From My Grandpa"

Check out TruthBasedLiving.com

Hey Everyone,

Most of my blogging takes place over at TruthBasedLiving.com. The more pronounced tips include actively seeking new information through learning. This can be achieved by reading and training. You should also engage yourself in physical activities that promote blood circulation on your brain. You should also learn to keep your stress levels at a low by not thinking too much about problems. It is also recommended to get enough sleep and eat right. To help you exercise your memory to improve its performance, here are some more tips that you can opt to do.

1. Make it a habit to write down notes about the things that you want to do and whatever you want to remember. This can aid you in achieving your goal until you no longer have to resort to this activity or do it less often.

2. If you are reviewing for exams and the likes, you must get enough rest after storing too much information on your brain. You can repeat the process after you have rested and before the date of the exam to help your brain absorb more information and retain most of them.

3. You should also practice visualizing things that you need to remember. For example, you need to remember too many names at a short period of time. It will help if you will associate the faces of the people and their names on images that will make you recall them easily.

4. While some people may attest that cramming work for them, this is not healthy as you try to force and overload your brain with too many information for a short period of time. If you have to study, give yourself ample time to finish everything that you have to review. Give your brain time to rest after absorbing too many data. This will help better your memory and for you to perform well on your exams.

--Guest Article

Happy Thanksgiving

I would like to wish all my family, friends, and readers a safe and Happy Thanksgiving! stretch our muscles. Why? Because stretching increases our flexibility, improves circulation, and helps relieve stress.

The same is true for stretching our minds and, yes, our lives. We allow ourselves to fall into habits and routines, and we get comfortable. And, before long, we are comfortable UNDER-achieving. We accept mediocrity and disappointment.

We need to STRETCH ourselves! Don't settle for mediocrity. Stretch yourself. We live in an Age of Expression! Everyone wants to be heard, appreciated, and understood. Yet few people are willing to invest the time and patience in understanding - TRULY understanding - others as well as the situations or circumstances surrounding them.

My mom used to say to me: "Brian, you have two ears and one mouth!" That meant, she would explain, that I should listen TWICE as much as I speak.

You don't learn ANYTHING by talking. Sure, talking can help you sort through your thoughts, but you don't take in any ADDITIONAL information by talking. You learn by listening - and by reading.

In reality, then, I could add to my mom's quote by saying that we're born with two ears AND two EYES. That means...we should listen and/or read FOUR TIMES as much as we speak!

Something to think about.

Give Each Day to God

The psalmist writes: "This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it" (Psalm 118:24).

On Sunday, June 7, we went over this passage at Sligo, where we looked at three decisions we should make each morning to make this verse a reality. If you have a relationship with Christ, then love should be the fuel that powers your life. We are called to love, but few people really even know what love means.

In my message Sunday (April 26), I dealt with both objects of our love (God and others), but I want to take a moment here and focus on that second commandment - "Love Your Neighbor."

What does it Mean to "Love"?

Love is not a feeling. It's a decision, a commitment. Indeed, love is an investment. When you love someone, you are investing a part of yourself - your heart - into that person. And Jesus tells us that we are to love all those with whom we come in contact.

What About Sinners?

I once heard a pastor quote from one of David's psalms to justify hatred of one's enemies, specifically God's enemies. In other words, said this pastor, we can and should hate sinners as well as sin. To be blunt....this is heresy!

Yet, there are many Christians that function this way. They literally hate those with whom they disagree and/or with whom they disapprove. Now, this doesn't mean that disagreement or disapproval automatically equates to hate. On the contrary, I disapprove of prideful people. This doesn't mean that I hate them. And I disagree (strongly) with slavery, but I still love and respect our Founding Fathers, including some of whom that owned slaves.

This pastor who quoted one of David's psalms neglected to understand what the literary genre of a psalm as well as the context of what David was saying. David's psalms were, in most cases, prayers. And David was acknowledging his hatred of his enemies before God -- and, while doing so, was asking God to "create in me a pure heart" and "renew a right spirit within me."

We are not to hate anybody. On the contrary, we are to love everyone! That is the standard to which Jesus calls us!

Do you love others -- God's way???

Coke vs. Pepsi

The definitive opinion on Coke vs. Pepsi! :-)

Rick Warren Invocation and the Name of Jesus

Well, the inauguration is over. Much has been written about the inauguration itself and the transfer of power. For this very brief blog post, I just want to comment on Rick Warren's invocation.

First, not everyone was happy that Obama even asked Warren to give the invocation. This was obvious at the mild smattering of polite applause Warren received as compared with the much more enthusiastic ovations for singer Aretha Franklin and the benediction speaker, the Rev. Joseph Lowery.

Of course, Lowery gave an impassioned prayer and his personal ties to the civil rights movement made today's event all the more symbolic. Yet, it was clear that Rick Warren did not have many enthusiastic friends today in Washington, D.C.

The reason for Dr. Warren's lukewarm reception today is, of course, the fact that he's a conservative, evangelical (and hugely influential) minister. So influential, in fact, that he played an instrumental role in banning same-sex marriage in California and has lent his voice to the movement that wants to roll back abortion rights. These are huge lightning rod issues amongst Obama supporters.

**See "What's Wrong With Rick Warren?"

Of course, the reasons that many Obama supporters hate Rick Warren are among those why I respect Warren.

The main thing, though, I respect about Rick Warren's invocation is his uncompromising and emphasized reference to Jesus. That was a welcome high note during today's proceedings.

At this point, we must all lift our new President up in prayer. I didn't vote for the man, but the American voters (by majority) spoke. And Mr. Obama is now President Obama. It's our duty as Christians and as Americans to pray for him.

Why Rick Warren Opposes Same-Sex Marriage

Barack Obama's selection to give the prayer at his upcoming inaugural continues to stir controversy. Rick Warren, author of the mega-bestselling The Purpose-Driven Life and pastor of a California megachurch, is controversial, because he opposes abortion rights and has campaigned to ban same-sex marriage.

Gay rights activists are particularly incensed. They insist that Obama, elected with overwhelming support from the gay community, should never have picked such a "divisive" figure. Gay rights advocates have called Warren "homophobic" and "hateful" for his support of Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that invalidated same-sex marriage in California.

**To watch and read about Rick Warren's interview with Ann Curry, click here. UNFORTUNATELY...they don't play the whole interview, and the place the website chose to stop the interview clearly shows their bias.**

Whenever one examines the issue of same-sex marriage, it must be done on two levels. First, the secular, civil level. And, then, the moral and religious one. In Warren's case, focus is generally on the issue's religious dimension, since the California pastor is...well...a pastor.

This blog post won't get into the civil aspects of the issue. I understand some people objecting to Warren bringing his religious beliefs into the public arena. I understand that criticism, though I don't agree with it, since a Christian has as much right to engage the public policy arena as any other citizen. But we'll leave that aspect of the issue for another day. For now, let's focus on the religious dimension of same-sex marriage.

It's clear that Rick Warren has little choice on the matter of same-sex marriage, when it comes to his Christian faith. The Bible from which he preaches clearly condemns homosexuality. If Warren were to support same-sex marriage, he would be turning his back on the Bible. This is simply not something a conscientious, honest, sincere, Bible-believing evangelical can do.

David R. Stokes, a pastor himself and columnist for TownHall.com, points this out in an excellent op-ed titled "An Evangelical Bridge Too Far." Pastor Stokes writes:

"No matter how understanding evangelicals are and how sincere some are to open a dialogue with same-sex marriage advocates and activists, there can be no real rapprochement without the willingness to change the way the Bible is read and interpreted. And that would be an evangelical bridge too far."

Sincere, Bible-believing evangelicals don't oppose same-sex marriage because of hate or homophobia. They object to gay marriage, because of what the Bible teaches on the subject. Pure and simple.

And while some gay rights activists will point out that earlier generations of evangelical Christians supported slavery and segregation on religious grounds, it's clear from a straightforward reading of Scripture that racism and race-based slavery are not consistent with Christian principles.

To argue that the Bible endorses race-based slavery shows the same kind of shallow and twisted logic that says the Bible supports polygamy. The Bible clearly condemns involuntary slavery with its denunciation of stealing and covetousness as well as Jesus' teachings on the Golden Rule. The fact that some people in the Bible practiced slavery doesn't make slavery right. The same is true for polygamy.

In the case of homosexuality, the Bible's moral teachings are consistent throughout. Of course, some critics of the Bible use this against Christians.

These critics argue that the harsh penalties for homosexuals in the Old Testament should prove that a literal reading of the Bible belongs in the past. These critics, among them scholars like former Anglican Bishop John Shelby Spong, say that Christianity must change and adapt to accommodate new discoveries and realities.

It's true that the Mosaic Law contained rather harsh and punitive measures for homosexuals (as well as for rebellious teenagers, witches, etc.), but the Mosaic Law was unique and is not one-dimensional. Parts of the Mosaic Law, particularly the ceremonial aspects and the penalties assigned to certain offenses, were temporary and applicable only to the Hebrew nation.

This is particularly clear with the addition of the New Testament, which separates the Kingdom of God from the realm of Caesar and which elevates grace over law. Christians in the New Testament and post-New Testament era are not called upon to use the arm of government to enforce specific religious orthodoxy, and the penalties of sin (whatever the sin may be) are in God's purview. It's the role of Christians today to reach out with love and compassion, not hatred or vengeance.

And few Christians have reached out with more love and compassion than Rick Warren. He and his wife have become global leaders in the fight against AIDS and poverty. To say now that Rick Warren is homophobic or hateful, because he takes a public position against same-sex marriage is unfair and quite extreme.

I hold a strong position against polygamy. As does Warren, I'm sure. Does that mean we hate those who practice polygamy???

To disagree with someone is NOT the same as hating him or her. Disagreement - even public disagreement - is not hatred. And opposing part of the gay rights agenda doesn't mean one is homophobic.

For crying out loud, I voted against a referendum in Ohio that would've allowed casino gambling in Clinton County. But I surely don't hate people who gamble. My wife's parents gamble - and do so in casinos. And I love and respect them.

It's utterly outrageous to say that Rick Warren is a bigoted homophobe, because he opposes same-sex marriage. He has every right to oppose it -- and to do so publicly. And his biblical convictions dictate that he oppose it!

And this is where the rubber meets the road. The choice that many (if not most) gay rights activists are giving people of faith (especially people of evangelical Christian faith) is this...

Support the gay rights agenda and, in doing so, jettison or change your religious beliefs....OR....be branded a hateful bigot!

Many evangelicals will cave to this pressure, because no one (least of all a true Christian) wants to be associated with bigotry or hate. But an honest Christian can't simply jettison the Bible or change its meaning to suit his or her needs at the moment. The Bible is either the Word of God or it's not. And if it is the Word of God, then it carries authority with it.

It is not for Rick Warren to decide whether the Bible is right about homosexuality. If Rick Warren is to be true to his Christian convictions and true to the Bible for what it is, then he has no choice but to support traditional marriage.

Thankful for our Veterans

To all my readers who are veterans, I'd like to say "Thank You." All too often, it's a source of stress, disappointment, anxiety, and even anger. What are some specific ways you can ease your money worries and address money problems?

1. Put Money in Perspective

The very first thing you must do is put money in perspective. Money should not be seen as the most important thing in your life, nor should it be viewed as something evil.

Money is a tool. A resource. And we should not look at money emotionally, but rather LOGICALLY and OBJECTIVELY.

2. Realize that Desiring More Money is NOT Evil

The Bible does NOT say that money is the root of all evil. It says that the LOVE of money is the root of all evil. (The newer English translations soften it to say "all kinds of evil," but the King James wording is closer to the original Greek). Money, therefore, kept in its proper perspective is NOT evil. What's more, it's not wrong to try to earn MORE money.

Quite honestly, it frustrates me to see and hear a lot of well-intentioned Christian people out there say that it's wrong to earn more money. They've allowed guilt to keep them from taking better care of themselves and providing for their families. This is a tragic shame!

Jesus didn't teach that you shouldn't earn money or try to increase your earnings. Jesus taught that you can't serve both God and money, and that you shouldn't trust in your riches.

God never says that it's wrong to be rich. Ever. In fact, God blesses several people in Scripture with great wealth. Some of the biggest names in the Bible were, in fact, wealthy. Think of Job...Solomon...Hezekiah...to name just three.

Think of it this way. If you're building a cabinet and realize that you are out of nails, are you going to start feeling guilty, because you are desiring more nails? If you're making a cake, and you run short on ingredients, chances are that you're NOT going to feel guilty about heading to the supermarket to get the necessary ingredients to finish the cake.

Likewise...if you keep money in the right perspective...then it's not wrong to look at your situation and recognize that you need more money to pay your bills, build up your savings, reduce and possibly eliminate your debt, finance your kids' education, etc., etc.

3. Understand that Money is a MEANS to an End

Money becomes an 'idol' or an obsession, when IT becomes the end, rather than the means. The proper perspective to take with money is to see it as a MEANS to an end, and to remember that your "end" should be submitted to God (along with your "means" of course as well).

In other words, you and your spouse should sit down and prayerfully set goals for your family -- retirement, savings, debt, vacations, kids' college, etc., etc.

And as you do that, if you realize you need more money to meet those goals, then it's NOT wrong to desire more money, to ask God for more, and to plan and work to earn the additional money.

For example, my wife and I have some plans to pay off our debt, build up our savings, and set aside money for some vacation/travel plans. Right now, I don't make enough money as a small-town pastor to pay for those things, so rather than get stressed out about it, worry about it, or wallow in self-pity, I am taking action.

4. Be Proactive

What kind of action? Well, sit down and write out your strengths and weaknesses, interests and knowledge, etc. Make a list of everything you have to offer (in terms of physical labor, creative brain power, or technical know-how) the marketplace. Then, do an assessment of what opportunities there are in your neighborhood, region, and on the Internet.

In my case, I work part-time at a local Christian school and I also do a lot of online writing (such as this, a few blogs, some articles with Suite101, and a few with AssociatedContent). I've also put together an online Christian marriage course, and am offering (no obligation to the subscribers) some affiliate products (that pay me a small commission, if they buy).

If you're not a writer, there are plenty of other money making ideas out there. There are even some ways to make money fast, such as blanketing your neighborhood with flyers offering your services to mow lawns, rake leaves, baby sit, etc....or....doing some side jobs as a contractor, freelancer, computer repair person, etc. (depending on your skills and talents).

The important thing is...don't be a victim. I forget what movie this line is from, but "Don't just sit there and bleed!" Do something!

5. Stop Whining

Don't just whine about how life is unfair. And stop blaming other people and circumstances for your problems. Yes, some people have it rough. Maybe you're one of those folks. Maybe your health isn't good. Maybe you were mistreated. Maybe....well...anything. Look, there comes a point where you have to accept the hand you were dealt, and do something with it.

I know that sounds harsh and insensitive. But it's the truth. You are where you are, but you don't have to stay there. Get up. Take action. Improve your situation.

There are plenty of resources out there to give you further ideas.

What's Happened to Civility?

What Happened to Civility? What Happened to being Polite?

As Senator John McCain was giving his acceptance speech to the Republican National Convention, he was interrupted at least twice (that I could tell while watching television) by hecklers. McCain's response to the first heckler included a statement that "the American people want us to stop yelling at each other."

If only that were true.

Sadly, I think the vast majority of Americans are accustomed to yelling and shouting (in the home, at school, at work, in government, on the Internet, etc.). And not only are we accustomed to it, most Americans practice it and (judging by the ratings on many of our TV talk shows and so-called reality shows) relish it.

It's as if we've lost the ability to be polite and reasonable. Not only have we lost the ability, I sense that most people have lost the DESIRE to be so.

We live in an age where heckling, "flaming" (Internet yelling and heckling), and verbal/written attacks are the norm - and are indeed part of our arsenal.

Even in small ways, this happens. Take a look at any blog or discussion forum, and what do you see? People "flaming" other people, and why? No reason, except they disagree with them or are offended by them.

Even here on THIS blog...there are occasional comments made to posts I write that are frankly rude and unnecessarily aggressive.

Over at YouTube, I have posted a few videos on different subjects, including a couple related to the War of 1812. Man! Talk about rude. "Rude" doesn't do justice to describing some of the comments.

I guess we shouldn't be surprised. Anger, insults, aggression -- all of this is manifested throughout our culture, from our music to TV to the movies to video games and from traffic to our government. Even in our homes.

What people don't realize is that these things have CONSEQUENCES. Why do you think violence - REAL violence - is on the rise? Violence in school. Violence in the home. Violence in the world. There IS a correlation.

When we lose the ability (and desire) to rationally and POLITELY communicate, we lose the ability to maintain peace, security, and (yes) democracy. This applies to the home, to our schools, to our communities and the world.

I don't mean to sound like Rodney King who famously asked in the early 1990s: "Can't we all just get along?" BUT...I'll put some similar questions to you.

Do we HAVE to yell so much? Do we HAVE to insult other people so much? Can't we disagree....RESPECTFULLY and with civility?

If the answer is 'no,' then we are in deep trouble.

So, my final question....are you part of the solution or part of the problem?

Something to think about.

Zig Ziglar on Attitude

The longer I serve in the ministry, the more I realize that the most significant day-to-day challenge that people face is their attitude. Most people in the world today live without a concrete purpose or direction. Because of that, they feel (deep down) empty and confused.

Motivational speaker Zig Ziglar encourages his audiences to be "meaningful specifics" as opposed to "wandering generalities." Most people fall into the latter camp, and they know they're missing the best of what life has to offer.

Rick Warren tapped into that need with the perfect book title -- The Purpose Driven Life -- and message. Rick Warren's book challenges us to live our lives on purpose.

And contrary to his critics, Warren's Purpose-Driven Life does not discredit or dishonor the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. Those who read the book and study it (and follow its recommendations) will be led right to the cross of Jesus Christ -- and will (in that journey) confront the full Gospel message.

This is not to suggest that I agree with everything Rick Warren has said or done, but criticism of The Purpose-Driven Life is simply without merit. Instead, we should pray that more people read it.

Does Your Marriage Need Help?

This August marks my 16th wedding anniversary. Wow! My wife is getting older. :-)

Sixteen years ago this summer, my wife walked down the aisle and pledged herself to me in holy matrimony. I still remember that day.

Marriage is a wonderful institution, but it can also be a challenging experience. I would be lying if I said that our marriage has has been blissful, sweet, and peaceful every minute and every hour of these now 16 years. We've had our mountaintop experiences, and we've also had our times in the valley.

While I'm still working (and will be working for some time) to be the best husband I can be to my wonderful wife, I decided to put together a short, 7-day e-course on marriage. The course is free. And you can sign up for it here.

I've called it the Christian Marriage Helper e-course.

In the interest of making a full disclaimer, the course costs you nothing - and I make no money on it. However, in the lessons, I have included information on some other resources and websites -- some of which (not all) are fee-based. And some (not all) of those pay a small (very small, I might add) commission for referrals. I say that - just so everything is on the up-and-up. But the course itself is totally free - and if you want to take it, just go here.

And I'd love to hear back from you. Let me know what you think. If it's been a blessing, let me know. If you think it needs some work, let me know that too.

Thanks and God bless you!

Vets Remember D-Day

Click here to read about the gathering of D-Day veterans at the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC.

The Steel Wave

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0Qh0lOPyrZk/SElxNbM1UEI/AAAAAAAAAK8/zayrYCmbuwA/s320/Steel+Wave.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5208818919484510274" />
It's June 6, 2008 -- the 64th anniversary of the Normandy D-Day invasion during World War II. Thought it might be a good time to recommend a book. I'm currently reading The Steel Wave by Jeff Shaara.

Shaara is one of my favorite writers. One of the greatest acting legends from Hollywood - a truly class act - has departed this life and stepped into eternity. Hollywood publicist Michael Levine said: ""If Hollywood had a Mt. Rushmore, Heston's face would be on it. He was a heroic figure that I don't think exists to the same degree in Hollywood today."

Some may think Levine's pronouncement a bit much, but I think he's right. Charlton Heston epitomized the 1950s and 60s era of Hollywood epic productions. He was a giant on the Silver Screen - a true icon of the film industry.

He was also a rarity for Hollywood, especially modern Hollywood. Charlton Heston was conservative. In the 1960s, he marched for the cause of civil rights (which some may see as inconsistent with conservatism - I do not!) and emerged in the 1980s and 90s as a leader of the conservative movement. He was most famous (or infamous, depending on your point of view) in his political activism as head of the National Rifle Association.

Not only that, but he was married - to the same woman - for 64 years! Considering the sordid "musical chairs" relationship antics of Hollywood today, that's saying something. In fact, considering the state of marriage in society overall, it's saying something!!

Charlton Heston was more than a celebrity. He was a role model. And he will be missed.

Michael W. I've been taking distance-learning seminary classes from Liberty since Fall 2004. Took a while to get the degree, and now that I have it....well, I'm gearing up for still more classes.

I told the members of Sligo Baptist Church, where I pastor, that receiving this degree means that I'm now "smart." Many of them, I'm sure, feel the same as my wife, which is is that it'll take more than a piece of paper to convince them of that. Oh well.

Anger and Injury Recovery

Looks like getting angry won't help you heal from injury. Today is officially (and should always be celebrated as) "George Washington's Birthday, observed."

That's right, we are supposed to honor ONE President this holiday - and that is the FIRST President. And we don't just honor him for his presidential achievements, but for what he did as the Continental Army commander in the Revolutionary War. And for what he did NOT do -- after the Revolutionary War.

There's never been an American leader as great as George Washington, and he deserves this holiday all to himself.

For more on this, read an article I did a while back for AssociatedContent. As Washington Times writer Thom Loverro puts it (in an excellent article on the Redskins and Coach Joe Gibbs), "The emotional pain of a football team doesn't compare with that of losing a young man who was a father, a son, a brother."

Second, regardless of how well or poorly the Redskins do, there are more important things in life than football and sports. I am a football fan - specifically a Redskins fan - but I understand that God, family, country, friends, etc. are much more enduring and highly esteemed (or at least should be) than football.

Having made those points clear, I nevertheless must express my disappointment with how the Washington Redskins are looking this season. It isn't so much that I'm emotionally upset at the team. It's that I'm frustrated and bewildered at how such a legendary franchise can become such a sputtering, lackluster disappointment - and remain that way for so long!

Just this season, the Redskins have lost five games in which they led at halftime. That's five blown games! Other than the blowout against the Patriots, the Redskins could have arguably won all or at least most of the games they've played this year. But due to mistakes, turnovers, and inexplicable ineptitude or lethargy at key moments, the Washington Redskins are now 5-7 and will almost certainly miss the postseason....again.

This is a team that, along with the San Francisco 49ers, dominated the NFC during the 1980s. This is a team that has been to the Super Bowl five times - winning three of those times! This is a team that is the second most valuable franchise in the NFL, surpassing even the Dallas Cowboys, the so-called "America's Team."

The Redskins, however, have made the playoffs only twice (TWICE!!) since the 1992 season.

Many Redskins fans (like myself) just want to know "Why"?

It isn't enough just to say they're "no good." They've had 15 years (since their last Super Bowl win) to GET "good"! Why can't they?

The problem with the Redskins is obviously DEEP within their psyche and their organization. Not even the legend Joe Gibbs has been able to turn things around (though Redskins fans caught a flash of hope in the 2005 season).

Between this season and the next, Redskins players, fans, management - and the owner - need to do more than talk about the draft, strategies, personnel, etc.

The Redskins need to do some serious soul-searching.

Farewell Sean Taylor

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0Qh0lOPyrZk/R05RTaSuBiI/AAAAAAAAAGY/z3qC-dxZODA/s320/fb_AAHP082_8x10~Sean-Taylor-Posters.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5138133618793514530" />
As a lifelong and diehard Redskins fan, I've been truly affected by the terrible tragic loss of Sean Taylor. Sure, there were problems, but the Redskins looked solid. They were clearly on their way to at least a wildcard playoff spot. After getting crushed by New England, however, it's been downhill since.

The Redskins barely eeked out a victory against the rather pitiful New York Jets and then came up short against the Eagles, Cowboys, and Buccaneers. Sure, they showed flashes of grit and promise in each of those games. But they also gave up big plays, committed inexcusable mistakes, and showed themselves to be (once again) a disappointment to their fans.

They now stand at 5-6 and face long odds to get into the 2007 postseason. Anything less than 9-7 (meaning they will have to win 4 of their remaining 5 games) will no doubt cause them to miss the playoffs.....again. And frankly, even 9-7 may not be good enough, when you consider the NFC. To really guarantee a playoff spot, they will need to win ALL of their remaining games. And, barring a divine miracle or two, that just won't happen. Not the way they're playing.

So, fellow Redskins fans, looks like we'll have to just endure the rest of this season and wait in hopeful anticipation for the next. By now, we're used to saying "next season," aren't we?

Meet E.G. Virtually everything I've written to date has been in the form of online articles, magazine features, newspaper op-eds or letters to the editor, and so forth. Well, I'm also an aspiring novelist.

I've been toying with several fiction ideas for YEARS, but never got further than an incomplete outline or a sloppy first chapter. Finally, I've buckled down and started writing something, and I mean...really writing something.

I'm six chapters into my first YA (young adult) fantasy novel. It's titled The Last Prince. I'm excited about the story, but I have a long way to go before it will be ready for submission.

I've outlined it, written the first six chapters, and have gotten some feedback on plot points and my initial writing. The consensus of the feedback is that I definitely have a lot more work to do. :-)

If any of you are interested in helping me out with this project, I could use beta readers. Let me know. And thank you.

Remembering 9/11

As we honor the six-year anniversary of the terrible events of September 11, 2001, don't forget to take a few moments to remember those families who lost loved ones.

Farewell to D James Kennedy

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0Qh0lOPyrZk/Rt9b_e5dkwI/AAAAAAAAAAo/iYvBsjI8Q4c/s200/72-DJK-in-DC-(squinting).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5106901648645395202" />
I would like to join with those praying for and paying respects to the family of evangelical pastor D James Kennedy. I get to teach American history again. While I have very much enjoyed serving as pastor of Sligo Baptist Church this past year, I must admit that I miss teaching. I really enjoyed interacting with teenagers in the classroom and helping them learn US history.

You see, I taught high school history for four years at Fair Oaks Academy (formerly Bethlehem Baptist Christian Academy) in Fairfax, Virginia. Fair Oaks Academy closed last year, and my family and I moved to Ohio.

Well....now, I get to teach again. The Christian Heritage & Homeschool Education of Wilmington (CHHEW) organization has partnered with Wilmington Christian Academy to offer university-style courses for parents homeschooling their kids. I've been asked to teach US history. So far, I have five students registered with a few more maybes.

Should be fun. At least for me. :)

James Somers Interview

James Somers is a pastor, Christian author, and (has become) a great friend. So many times, we focus on what we want and DON'T have, rather than on what we DO have.

Take some time to, as the hymnwriter exhorts, "count your many blessings - name them one by one." List out all the things you have, that you can be genuinely thankful for - and be specific. Don't just say "Thanks for my family." List each person in your family individually - and say some things about each person, things you appreciate about that person and the blessings he or she brings to your life.

You'll be amazed how this exercise will change your life.

The Original George Mason

George Mason University’s “Cinderella” basketball year sadly came to an end Saturday night against a powerful Florida team. George Mason nevertheless enjoyed a well-deserved run in the spotlight and should be proud for all that they accomplished. Their namesake too had a moment in the spotlight many years ago.

Like the university his name now graces, George Mason was not well known outside of Virginia. In fact, just as the name “George Mason” today looks a bit odd on NCAA “March Madness” charts, George Mason wasn’t exactly a household name in 1787 either. Unlike so many politicians today who gravitate to the limelight and dedicate their entire careers to personal advancement, George Mason never strayed too far from home, did not seek titles, and did not covet power or fame.

George Mason’s moment of greatness came in the sultry days of September 1787, as the delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, were putting their finishing touches to a document they had labored and wrangled over for the entire summer. A draft of their handiwork, the new Constitution of the United States, had been prepared for their review and final approval.

Mason had grave misgivings over the convention’s final product. When the time came for the delegates to affix their signatures to the document, George Mason stunned his colleagues and refused to sign.

A lifelong Virginian, George Mason served at various times as an Anglican vestryman, a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, and leader of the Fairfax militia. He co-authored the Fairfax Resolves, one of the earliest protest documents against British tyranny, and served in the Virginia Convention that formally broke the colony’s organizational ties to Great Britain. In that capacity, he was the primary author of Virginia’s first constitution and Declaration of Rights. James Madison would call Mason a "Master Builder" for his great work. Thomas Jefferson added that Mason was “of the first order of greatness.” In fact, Jefferson borrowed liberally from George Mason’s Virginia Declaration of Rights when crafting the Declaration of Independence.

Victory over the British in the American Revolution gave Mason hope that his services would no longer be needed in public life. He was mistaken. Like his neighbor George Washington, he played a role in trying to manage interstate relations and commerce issues in the absence of a strong central government. In 1786, Mason reluctantly agreed to represent the Commonwealth of Virginia the following summer in Philadelphia to revise the Articles of Confederation.
The aging George Mason was eager to get to work when he arrived in Philadelphia, and showed little patience for the delays caused by formalities and politicking. He wrote to his son: "I begin to grow heartily tired of the etiquette and nonsense so fashionable in this city."

Mason nevertheless respected the awesome task before the delegates, and threw himself fully into his duties. He backed James Madison’s Virginia Plan, yet worked hard to carefully limit the powers of the national government. He furiously condemned the African slave trade, and played a key role in defining the impeachment process.

Yet despite months of hard work, when the moment came, George Mason withheld his signature from the Constitution. Mason voiced several reasons including the document’s compromise on the slave trade (Mason wanted it abolished immediately). However, his primary objection was that it did not contain a bill of rights. To the dismay of many, including his close friend George Washington, Mason returned to Virginia and joined Patrick Henry in opposing the Constitution’s ratification.

Though the Constitution was ultimately ratified, Mason’s fight was not in vain. Calls for a national guarantee of civil rights could be heard throughout the country. When James Madison was elected to the First Congress under the new Constitution, he introduced twelve amendments to the Constitution, ten of which were soon approved and became known as the Bill of Rights. Madison’s amendments drew heavily from George Mason’s Virginia Declaration of Rights.

Mason would live to see the national Bill of Rights approved by Congress and ratified by the states in 1791, but would die peacefully the year following. It was a quiet and lonely end at Gunston Hall that capped a lifetime of humble, dedicated service. Like the NCAA “Cinderella” team that today bears his name, George Mason truly was “of the first order of greatness.”
